What are GCSEs
The national curriculum in the UK is constructed in five key stages. Key Stage 4 covers Years 10, and 11 for pupils aged 14 – 16. During Key Stage 4, pupils work towards national qualifications – GCSEs.
GCSE subjects
GCSE subjects are broadly divided into core subjects and foundation subjects.
Core subjects include:
English
Mathematics
Science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology, usually taken as separate subjects)
Foundation subjects include:
Computing
Physical Education
Citizenship
In addition, schools are required to offer subjects across a range of areas, including:
Arts (such as Art and Design, Music and Drama)
Design and Technology (including DT and Food Preparation and Nutrition)
Humanities (such as History and Geography)
Modern Foreign Languages
Religious Studies and sex education
Pupils select their GCSE subjects in line with their school’s curriculum requirements.

Exam boards and school structures
Schools choose which exam boards to follow for GCSE courses, such as AQA, OCR, Edexcel or CIE. Because GCSE syllabuses and exam boards vary between schools, transferring from one school to another during GCSE study is generally not accepted by most institutions.
There is also a growing trend among independent schools to begin GCSE courses in Year 9.

One-Year Pre-A-Level Course
Some independent schools offer a one-year GCSE or Pre-A-Level course, specifically designed for overseas students who are transitioning into the UK education system and preparing for A-Level study.
