What are 7+ and 8+
entrance exams?
7+ and 8+ entrance assessments usually take place when a child is in Year 2 or Year 3. They are used by selective prep schools to identify pupils who are ready for a fast paced and challenging curriculum.
Most schools test:
English – reading comprehension, spelling, grammar and creative or descriptive writing
Mathematics – number, arithmetic, word problems and early reasoning skills
Verbal Reasoning – vocabulary, logic and language based reasoning
Non Verbal Reasoning – pattern recognition, spatial awareness and visual problem solving
Pupils who perform strongly in the written papers are typically invited back for an interview, where schools may explore a child's thinking skills, interests and character.
