What are A-Levels?

A-Levels are subject-based qualifications that normally require students to study three or four subjects over two years. Many students begin Sixth Form with four subjects and drop one in the second year.

In general, universities in the UK consider results from at least three A-Level subjects as part of their entry requirements. The choice of A-Level subjects therefore has a direct impact on university degree options and future academic pathways.

Some independent schools also offer 18-month A-Level programmes or one-year pre-university courses, designed for students following accelerated routes into higher education.

Balancing strengths and interests

Choosing a combination of subjects that reflect existing strengths while still offering appropriate academic challenge is strongly advised.
Understanding Higher Level and Standard Level

Students take three Higher Level and three Standard Level subjects, with HL courses requiring greater depth and independent study.
