13+ Entrance Preparation
The 13+ examination is a key stage in the admissions process for many UK independent senior schools. It assesses a pupil’s academic readiness for senior school study and often plays a decisive role in confirming provisional offers made at 11+.

What is the 13+?
Senior schools use 13+ assessments to evaluate candidates’ ability across a broader and more demanding academic range. Two main routes exist:
School-specific 13+ exams, set and marked by individual senior schools
13+ Common Entrance, set by the Independent Schools Examinations Board (ISEB) and usually taken in Year 8
For Common Entrance, core subjects include:
English
Mathematics
Science
In addition, pupils may be required to sit papers in subjects such as French, History, Geography, Spanish, Latin, or Theology, Philosophy and Religion.

Why 13+ preparation matters
The 13+ tests depth of understanding, not just surface knowledge.
Many top schools make conditional offers based on earlier assessments.
Passing Common Entrance in Year 8 is often required to secure those offers.
Preparation at this stage must therefore be both academically rigorous and strategically aligned with school expectations.
