11+ Entrance Preparation
The 11+ examination is typically taken in Year 6 and is used by independent senior schools as part of their admissions process. The assessments are academically demanding and require pupils to demonstrate both strong subject knowledge and effective exam technique.

What is the 11+?
The 11+ is designed to assess a pupil’s readiness for entry into senior school.
Most schools examine candidates in:
English – reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary and writing
Mathematics – number, arithmetic, problem solving and reasoning
Verbal Reasoning – logic, language patterns and vocabulary
Non-Verbal Reasoning – visual and spatial reasoning
While English and Mathematics broadly follow the national curriculum, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning are not school-based subjects. As a result, many pupils encounter these question types for the first time in the 11+ context.

Why preparation matters
The 11+ is often a pupil’s first competitive entrance examination.
Question styles and timing differ significantly from standard classroom assessments.
Strong academic ability alone may not be sufficient without exam familiarity and technique.
Structured preparation helps pupils understand expectations, manage time effectively and approach the exam with confidence.
